There’s nothing quite like a new, upcoming band that actually writes great music. Playing to Vapors recently released their new single Ghost Hunter and let me say, it really is a great song.

The song has a nice, eerie mood to it and flows very nicely. The vocals hit nice pitches that connect well with the guitar work. The chorus chant “Everyone leads and no one believes” sounds great in company of the strongly written verses and the package as a whole sounds nicely polished and well thought out. If I have any complaint, it’s that I wish it was a bit longer. With such good material, I wish it would have been more epic. With that being said, I am glad to have found these guys and am very excited to hear more from them!

In college I played drums in a band with a few friends I met in a music club called Musicians Collective (Mco).  We were called The Pet Names.  Most of our power/pop, indie rock songs were written by the band’s frontman Alex Sobel (Guitar/Vocals).  However, the lone female in the group, Rebecca Flore (Bass), wrote a song every once in a while.

The band was pretty short lived.  Our highlight was probably playing alongside Saint Seneca at a radio station on Indiana University’s campus (my one shameless namedrop for the blogpost).  We also recorded one LP called “Bitter”.  Almost all of the songs we had are featured on our one album, but a few aren’t.  ”Caffeine Shakes and Bloodshot Eyes”, written by Rebecca Flore, was one of those songs.

Not long after The Pet Names split, I recorded a cover of “Caffeine Shakes and Bloodshot Eyes”.  My intention was for it to be a tribute to our band, and to shed light on what I felt was a great song in danger of being forgotten.  Around the same time however, Rebecca, and the lead guitarist of The Pet Names, Joey Hribar, started a band called Thoughtless.  “Caffeine Shakes and Bloodshot Eyes was one of the first songs they recorded.

Their version is better…

Not only that, but Thoughtless released one of my favorite albums in the Columbus local scene called “It Gets Better Kid”.  They, like The Pet Names, were fairly short lived due to Rebecca moving to Canada and their drummer, Biice, moving to California.  All of their songs live on through their recordings, and their performance at Kafé Kerouac for the Lost Orchards EP release show is a performance I will always remember.
